I'm not sure what "a PERL environment" implies, but it can't be a
bona fide PERL installation. Two apps I'm familiar with, the
Xnews newsreader and the Hamster mail/news server, use PCRE's
without being dependent on having PERL installed.

If the difficulty in implementing PERL Re's wouldn't be too
great, I submit the change would be well worth it due to the
immense benefits gained in both power and ease of use.
