Several things can lead to slowness and excessive use of memory. Some
of these:
1. Undo steps. The default setting is an unbelievable 100 steps -
Tools >Options >OOo >Memory
2. Graphics cache. While you have that tab open. Some people dispute
that the settings make any difference. FWIW, my settings are 32Mb, 2Mb,
0:10 and 20.
3. Dictionaries. This file lists the dictionaries which are loaded.
There are 3 dictionaries per language:
/<path>/openoffice.org2.0/share/dict/ooo/dictionary.lst
You are probably using Windows, so interpret / as \
Delete the dictionaries you do not want to load.
4. Hard formatting. Use styles instead (F11).
5. Large numbers of range names (Insert >Names >Define). Use absolute
addresses instead where that will suffice. There are also names created
with Data >Define Range but I have not heard of anyone using large
numbers of such names.

hi
I've bee a new user or openoffice and have been experimenting with the
software for the past 3 months. Initial response is WOW!, but with
constant day-to-day operations i'm facing some peculiar situations:
1. I'm working with a calc document which is around 2.5 MB in size
having 16,000 rows and 12 columns. When i change the data of a
particular cell and try to save the file it takes close to 3 minutes. I
do not have any linked document nor do i have any special characters in
the cells. These are plane text cells.
2. I'm working of centrino processor 1.7 GHz and 512 MB RAM with page
file size of 750 MB, but the moment i start up the open office my memory
consumption of both Physical as well as virtual shoots up from 40% to
close to 80% utilization. Is there any means of optimizing the usage of
open office?
Regards
himanshu
