Hi Larry
The design for saving to media is so terrible in Gnu format Ubuntu, and becomes such a horrendous pain in the butt after updating to Kubuntu. I really don't understand how you think this can be acceptable to anyone. I'm so angry from having spent an hour getting Open Office to save to backup usb device. And the biggest problem is that I was just playing and trying this and trying that and NOW I have no idea what I did to make it work. You really don't endear yourself to those of us who have used MS Word and found the function to be so simple so easy.
I'm guessing that you're new new to Linux, and that you are not familiar with the way your system is mounting your usb device. You sound very frustrated, and you are blaming OpenOffice.org because you don't know who else to blame.
Different Linux distros mount usb devices in different ways. Some mount them automatically, and some don't. And the directory they are mounted in can vary from distro to distro, or you can customise that yourself. You need to find out where Ubuntu/Kubuntu mounts your device. (I think from memory it does mount it automatically.)
I'm currently using PCLinuxOS. My usb devices are automatically mounted inside the /mnt (stands for "mount") directory. Other distros mount them in the /media directory or elsewhere.
When I try to save an OpenOffice.org document, I am shown my home directory. From there, I press the "up one level" folder twice, then double click on the "mnt" folder. Inside I find my usb drive (labelled "removable" on my machine). I double click on it, go to the directory I want to save the document in, and click on "Save".
I hope that gives you some hints about how it might work on your system. If you have more questions, please ask. And I can get hold of a Ubuntu disk if you're having difficulties unique to Ubuntu.
You need to improve this in your design. If I have to continue to struggle with this on a daily basis, it is grounds for divorce.
I think it all comes down to the way you set up your system (or the way it comes set up by default).
My personal preference (in Linux, Mac and Windows) is NEVER to save directly to a usb device. I just don't trust it. Writes to a usb device are always completed in the background over time, and it's much too easily to pull the device out before it's finished. It's always safest to unmount the device before you pull it out, but sometimes you forget, or the device gets knocked accidentally.
I ALWAYS save to the hard drive first, and then copy to the usb device later. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but I haven't had any problems with lost data since doing that.
The Ubuntu forums (www.ubuntuforums.org) are very good, and that would be the best place to ask questions about mounting usb devices.
