This is a sore subject on this list... LOL!

Basically, there is no Outlook equivalent yet in Open Source. Many people
tout Evolution on Linux, but there is no workable Windows version that is
any good. (There is one the kind of works, but it is buggy as heck).
Thunderbird does a good job, but it is not business class like Outlook is.

On the horizon is a piece of Open Source software called Chandler, but it is
not yet available. It is slow in the progress department, but it is actually
making progress, and it looks to be a serious contender when it is finally
released and working.

If you'd like to set up a a web server using web based email, you can look
at open source groupware servers that run on Apache and PHP. This would give
you Outlook style functionality, but it would be totally web based. you can
however connect in via POP3 and IMAP using Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.
depending on the groupware software. An excellent example of this is
egroupware (www.egroupware.org) but there are several others to choose from.
It is a bit of a task to set up from what I here though...

Good Luck!

Sincerely,
Andrew Robertson

Subject: [discuss] curiousity about office products etc...

So I have been experimenting with differant office suites out there. I dont
have alot of money so the more free the better. ;) Anyway there is this
one disturbing thing to me. As far as I can tell Microsoft office is the
only one that comes with Outlook which is an absolutely awesome mail client
in my opinion. I like it because it integrates using calendar's and
reminders and such. I dont remember all the features cause its been quite a
while since I was able to use it regularly. Anyway I have been hoping to
find one that is as good as Outlook from the opensource community for free
and preferably with a office suite of some sort.

Anyway what it comes down to is I have not been able to be successful in
this endeavor. What I am wondering is why this is not happening? I am just
curious why there is not a awesome email client like outlook only open
source. Did Microsoft strike a deal where no one could make a free good
email program like theirs? LOL okay that is a little farfetched I know. I
just am curious is all. :)
