You can do this in writer, but it is more complicated. ;) in the help file,
search for "List of Regular Expressions" and there will be a full list of
special characters.

to do a find and replace on special characters, in the find and replace
dialog, click the "More Options" dropdown, and check the "regular
expressions" checkbox. this causes it to look for these expressions rather
than literal text. Yes, it is more complicated than M$ word, but it makes it
more flexible.
