Hi Alex

You are getting a bit OT for an OpenOffice.org list.

Have you had a look at http://distrowatch.com/ ?

There is a huge selection, and lots of useful links on that page
(perhaps especially http://makethemove.net/ ). That being said, for the
beginner the various flavours of ubuntu are generally stable and have
very active support groups. I suggest you try the "Live CD" version of
one or more, so you can get some idea of how they handle your hardware,
and decide what window manager you like (KDE, Gnome, Ice, etc).

Have a look around, but depending on the amount of memory your machines
have, almost any system should run, with more or less difficulty in
setting it up.

By the way, you have committed a breach of netiquette in just replying
to a previous posting. You should always start a new thread with a new
subject if your post doesn't deal with the matter of the original thread.

Have fun

Russell
