I've looked at Scribus, AbiWord, Gimp, Gnumeric and Imendio Planner, so far. I actually did fire up my old copy of Applix but I didn't get so far as to walk through all the pathways to see what the effects are.

The apps I've looked at are all slightly different. AbiWord has the "Save Copy" feature, but the Save and Save As are actually worse than OOo. AbiWord will happily let you save your formatted paper as .txt, marking your document as 'saved'; if you quit at that point, you're toast.
