Hi, Hester,

Your file didn't come through. Some files do, most don't.
Most lists block attachments. It's generally very bad form to try to send
them to a whole list.
I suspect that your Excel file is in the new Excel 2007 format, is that
right? In that case OpenOffice.org can not read it, at least not yet.
If it is in the new MS Excel format, then *nothing* else can read it now
or for the foreseeable near future. Lack of interoperability is
classically how MS tries to drive new sales.
In that case, you'll have to contact the author of the document [1] and
have them send you the file in a better format.
We recommmend OpenDocument (ISO/IEC 26300), since that is what most
companies and governments are backing and have started to use already.
There is also a great (and growing) amount of software out there which can
use OpenDocument. The OpenDocument foundation and a few others have
started providing different plugins for legacy applications like MS Office
which for various political reasons do not yet support OpenDocument

[1] Some mail clients or extra filters can be configured to detect and
auto-respond to defective attachments. If your program can do that, then
you might draft a polite message explaining how senders can improve
interoperability.
