I was intrigued with Open Office as a great open source alternative to
MSWord, but am very disappointed in the product (Writer). Almost always a
macro is built on a series of search/replace options, and a crafty user
occasionally relies on some artificial coding (like, triple tabs) to set up
a sequence of search replace.
Writer fails miserably. You can search for arcane things and replace with
arcane things... but you can't search for styles and the moment you run a
search/replace all the styles revert to default. I searched extensively for
possibilities and could locate only some really elaborate macros to do a
simple task that are way beyond anyone who isn't a software engineer.
Open Office is a good idea, but kind of like MacWrite for Juniors.
Sorry, it's gone off my machine.
