When I close a document or the application and there are changes to
be saved, the mouse does not automatically click back to the default
even though this is set in the control panel/mouse settings.

There is an option that needs to be set for OOo to do that as well (unsure
why OOo doesn't use the OS settings for this)...
Have a look at tools > options > openoffice.org > view under "mouse
positioning"...
