It's not the reported slowness at startup that I found reported
earlier, this is an overall slowness. Windows in OO are redrawn
almost atomically in all icones and very slow. I tried making
the default java the Sun 5 one, instead of the default gcj,
but that may not even be relevant here.
Basically creating presentations has now become very very
cumbersome. There must be something wrong in the install.
FWIW, I'm using Gnome, I will check out another window manager
to see if that's the problem (one other terminal program has
similar issues with basic window operations like a resize,
and emacs also scrolls like a snail).

Are you using the OpenOffice.org supplied by Fedora? It has
modifications not found in the version available from
<http://download.openoffice.org>. Some of the modifications are nice
improvements (such as GStreamer and Gnome print dialog integration), but
some cause problems. Even though I've been using Fedora for years, I
stopped using their OpenOffice.org after problems with crashes.
I suggest removing Fedora's OOo and installing OpenOffice.org from
<http://download.openoffice.org>.
