I imagine that what I am about to suggest is NOT a minor change, but here goes anyway. I'd like to suggest increasing the number of columns to at least 367 which 1 + the number of days in a leap year. The current limit is 256 (2^8) which can't handle a full year of days. 512 would be fine.
