It's called OpenXML or Office 12 format, and you can see here it's
scheduled for OpenOffice.org (which comes out in about a year):

For the impatient, I hear that OpenOffice.org variants (such as
NeoOffice) already support support for OpenXML, but I'm sure it's limited.
