Hi,
I've been using OO writer and calc for about a year now personally
and as a medical professional. I have found these areas to be key
areas where improvement would vastly improve usability.
I apologize in advance if any of these have already been corrected or
if my understanding of OO writer is simply too limited to know how to
make these areas work as I would like them to work.
Some of your requests have been made before and in many cases, the
issues are not OOo's but the manufacturers of the software you mention.
Remember that OOo isn't just a Windows program.
1. Work with Nuance's Dragon Naturally Speaking so that DNS can
search OO writer documents to add words and learn writing styles
using the "Add words from your documents to the vocabulary" feature.
Not being able to read OO docs greatly increases a DNS users'
"training" time with DNS.
Have you contacted Nuance on this issue? The OOo developers do not have
access to the Dragon Naturally Speaking source code which makes it
pretty hard to get DNS working with OOo.
2. Work with Stedman's Dictionary so that Stedman's dictionary
software can be utilized in OO docs. It can in MS, but not OO. I
haven't tried Stedman's Spellchecker software yet, but if that
software couldn't open up OO docs, it would greatly decrease the
usefulness of OO for me as well.
Same as with Dragon Naturally Speaking. Contact the developers to
provide the source code to be worked on or get them to provide an OOo
version.
3. Make it so that users can easily upload entire txt file
dictionaries into OO. Typing in single entries just isn't
economical. I've created new OO dictionaries, but after multiple
searches for these new dictionaries to copy and paste old txt
dictionaries into, I still haven't been able to find where OO stores
the new dictionaries.
4. Make dragging and dropping an entire column or row possible in OO
calc a reality. Creating a new column, copying, pasting, then
deleting the old column is cumbersome. OO calc also won't allow me
to insert and shift to the right entire columns for some odd reason.
1-4 would be the best improvements. Sadly I have decided to switch
back to MS for now because of the current limitations mentioned
above. I'd love to see OO make improvements in these areas. Again I
apologize in advance if it is simply my understanding that is
limited. Below are listed some other minor areas that could be
improved.
5. Make it so that the bottom paragraph tab in OOW can be moved
without having to move the top tab as well. My formating is
sometimes different than the standard, so this would help.
6. Make it so that page format margins can be adjusted without
affecting the entire document. I.e. make it so that individual page
margins can be changed individually.
7. For new users, changing OO Calc to OO Table would make better
sense to me.
Tables mean data base tables. I would be confused, at least for awhile.
8. Make borders of headers and footers separately adjustable. And
make text that is written outside of header or footer filed (because
of its length) selectable by cursor.
9. Make it so that commas can be inserted into mail merge address
block and spaces can be removed.
10. Keep the page text from jumping up or down when selecting text
when special toolbars are used by making the toolbar stay on or stay
off, rather than appearing as needed.
This is adjustable now. You can have toolbars work in different ways.
Thank you for allowing me to provide you this input.

The best place to provide your input is on the OOo web site. You can
submit the request for enhancement there.
http://qa.openoffice.org/issue_handling/pre_submission.html
Also, as I mentioned earlier, contact the manufacturers of the software
that you want to work with OOo to make this happen. They have access to
the source code for OOo but the OOo developers don't have access to
their code.
