As students and probably some professors, I suggest that what you want to do is avoid working on the internals of the code, but rather do add-ins, to improve or extend or add features, etc. "Learning" the overall code is a gargantuan, very, very big job and it is very unlikely any single person does know it, even at Sun or OO.o. Assuming you are already thinking along those lines, a couple of sample, specific questions may get you a better response as to what direction you should go. Sorry I can't offer anything more targetted, but that's all I can say.
