Hi All

I have become sufficiently annoyed by the behaviour of autocomplete to consider raising an issue. Being a rather slow typist, I value the use of autocompletion, though I know many of you turn it off.

However, if I have a document open, and for some reason look up the Help files, the word completion list becomes populated with words from the help file, which then become offered as options. These seem to be rarely likely to be useful.

This behaviour is seen in 2.4.1 (and earlier) and persists in 3.0 at last to the version I have installed, which is Dev300 m25

If there is any enthusiasm, I'll raise an issue for it.

Thanks for your thoughts

Russell
I would like to see a major change in the way autocomplete works, I think that it should have a PERMANENT dictionary, that stays in memory so that at some point you could turn off the gather words function and have it always refer to your permanent dictionary.

Actually Robert, in looking at the behaviour, I looked up word completion in the Help, and there is a suggested work-around which goes part way - to enabling such a function, that is to copy your "technical" words to a text document, then open that at the beginning of each work session. I guess you could then reduce the maximum number of entries to correspond to that number although I don't know if the limit works by discarding current entries to add more. I don't know that I have ever reached the 500 word limit set as default. I normally only write reports of few pages.

The method described above helps, but it still leaves the major inconvenience of having to go through these steps before EVERY session of word processing. The gather words function is very dumb in the sense that it cannot be programmed by the user to ignore things like words out of titles in all caps, strings with numerals, things like this, "hinge............$1.29" so that the next time you type hin you get that string etc. So you end up going into the internal dictionary of autocomplete and clearing out a lot of junk, very frequently. And if you turn off gather words, it ends up completely disabling the autocomplete feature. So what is really needed is to make the internal dictionary permanent, in the sense that it is not cleared out when you end a word processing session but is retained for the next session. Somehow I doubt that that would require a huge amount of re-coding. If this change isn't made, the autocomplete feature is so limited in usefulness that it might as well be removed altogether.
