downloaded openoffice today, control panel showing installed, not showing up
in start menu programs, only folder showing up on desktop, can't

You do not tell us what operating system you are using.
The openoffice file you downloaded should be double clicked to run it
and it will go through a number of install screens and install. There
should then be an OpenOffice.org folder with 2.4 or 3.0 on it depending
which version you downloaded. In that folder should be writer, calc,
impress etc.
If you cold give us some more information we may be able to help you
perform the install.
