A ppa is a "Personal Package Archive" - see: http://www.ubuntu.com/news/launchpad-ppa https://help.launchpad.net/Packaging/PPA PPA's are great for testing & also installing software that has not been released to the mainstream repositories. But doing so requires that you understand: 1) what you are installing, and 2) the package that you install is not an official Ubuntu package.
