A ppa is a "Personal Package Archive" - see:

PPA's are great for testing & also installing software that has not been
released to the mainstream repositories. But doing so requires that you
understand: 1) what you are installing, and 2) the package that you
install is not an official Ubuntu package. For instance, I use several
ppa packages for testing and for various 'fixes', but in doing so I also
understand that my system could be at risk by installing the package(s).
