Agreed, but that is cumbersome.

Moreover, I use Veldane and there the facility is not available. 

I will give the other solution a try and keep you posted.

You should be able to get most of the symbols you want with 

Insert > Special Character...

The Arial Font has the card suit characters in the subset 
Miscellaneous Characters.  And there are lots of special characters in 
the Wingdings Font.
