The latter are much less elegant, but surely work wherever there is standard perl or bash available, that is even in Windows with cygwin, without installing anything else. When you have to use Perl modules, even on Linux, it is very likely you'll need some manual installation/configuration and update. I don't know about the OP, but I'm definitely interested to see that code online, please do it. If you don't know where to publish it and/or it's not documented, I can help with that: just send me the bare scripts and I'll put them at http://freesoftware.zona-m.net/ with an explanation on how to use it. Obviously everything would be under open licenses as everything else on that website, and I'll giving full credit to you as the author!
