I am not that naive. Do you think that some people on LO do not have commercial interests? and are not "primarily thinking of their commercial interests"? An example of commercial interests are the certifications: http://www.documentfoundation.org/lists/discuss/msg01515.html "We should be able to get EU finance for training community members as assessors and generate a revenue stream to support the Foundation. To get an idea, ECDL/ICDL did 9 million certificates in 43 countries last year. That would generate revenue to employ 200 full-time engineers to work on the project [the OP refers here to LO] and provide expenses and retainers for key personnel. " http://www.libreoffice.org/lists/marketing/msg00257.html "This is how ECDL/ICDL started and they did 9 million certificates last year in 43 countries. This is easily enough to sustain the Foundation independently but we need it to scale and for that we need to extend to as many countries as possible as quickly as possible. If you ever dreamed of setting up your own business based on FOSS this could be the opportunity you have been waiting for." http://www.documentfoundation.org/lists/discuss/msg01615.html "I think we need to move on. Put the energy into making LibreO strong. This is why I'm proposing alternative methods of raising development funds, then the community through the Foundation is not dependent on any big corporations and we can enable community members to set up their own sustainable businesses based on LibreO and services based on it. " There is not simply altruism behind all this. Not to mention the obvious interest of taking the control on the technical decisions to other hands.
