Paul, Three options:
1. Go to a local university, or library, and ask for someone to download it for you, or burn it to a CD. 2. The size of OpenOffice is *NOT* "ridiculous". OpenOffice.org is SEVERAL ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE smaller than MICROSOFT OFFICE, for example. Wants facts, here are the facts: Microsoft Office 2010 (trial version, free download) http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/01/501016817-10234441--EUR//office2010/X16-32007.exe Size: 586 MB (near a full CD) Download time: 3.5 hours on my broadband cable modem OpenOffice.org Size: 153 MB (less than 1/3rd of a CD) Download time: 43 minutes On my 1Mbit cable modem. So before you panic, do the math. Or get a real broadband provider. Most countries have free high-speed internet access at public libraries. Or you can ask someone to download it for you.
