Yeah, read about that, too. Funny story.

Truth be told: Many many many people use powerpoint (or impress for that matter) for lots of purposes they were never meant to be used for, and the program interface makes it very easy to just spam your audience with nice meaningless bullets of hot air, interspersed with nice colourful images and fancy fade-ins. Even without those, it es very easy to make presentations that are at best a waste of time, at worst ... see here:

That is not to say powerpoint was useless or whatever, it's just being used for purposes and in ways were not meant to be.

I wonder if there was a way to change the software in a way that encourages not only more pleasant results but also discourages the habit of just putting everything in a bunch of slides.

I have no idea how that could or would be done. Maybe it's impossible without first changing the opinions of a lot of people. This is just a random thought. If Impress could attain anything in this direction, though, it might also earn itself a few new users.
