you should be able to load your document with .doc extension in
OpenOffice.org. When you make changes to it and save the document again,
you will get a warning that using the ".doc" format might cause a loss
of formatting. If you want to keep the ".doc" format you must ignore the
warning and keep the current format. And in case you don't use any
complicated formattings in your document the warning is kind of
overeager anyway.

When you want to save a copy of your working document in ".doc" format
by using "save as...", you have to select the "Microsoft Word
97/XP/2003" format in the format listbox of the file save dialog.
