Correct.  The upstream OVS kernel module has never support bridge compatibility.

Bridge compatibility was part of the OVS distribution until 1.10.  If you want 
to use it, you'll need to use 1.9.x or earlier.  However, we'd recommend using 
the OVS tools if you can.
