thanks Brent. this is what I am doing it seems to work. I guess I was missing 
the default gw??

nothing much. I have bridge br0 to which I have attached eth0.. I just wanted 
that anything to the bridge will be handled normally as eth0 would. I guess I 
should have followed the DHCP thing in the FAQ more closely
