Perhaps you can consider the problem of how well programmers are able
to juggle many variables and many paths. What are the limits for
average programmers before they are likely to make a mistake? It has
been stated that about 5 to 7 variables is a maximum for humans to juggle
correctly. That would indeed be a trivial program. What happens when there
are dozens of variables and stimuli which may occur in any given
sequence? Even the variation among programmers would be interesting.
I would further limit the study to programmers who are not using
formal mechanisms such as truth tables, state transition diagrams, etc,
which is probably more the norm.
