I would argue that the whole nature of the industry has changed
radically since 1971.  Whilst the terms programmers and analysts are
still used, the job descriptions of these people have changed out of all
recognition.  Moreover, the processes of system development have been
revolutionized in the last 20 years.

This doesn't answer your questions, I am just thinking that the
framework in which your questions are asked is not an appropriate one.
