Temporal issues of been of interest to me for quite a while, though
I've not come across much research that provides distinct guidelines
that are not strongly influenced by context.

Within the HCI community there is some temporal issues work, though
normally at the level of seconds (not hours). Broadly speaking, timing
is known to influence performance, task satisfaction, user input
strategy etc., but the nature and boundaries of those influences seem
hard to identify. Experiemental results have been hard to replicate.

One research story (I've yet to see the paper) is that when using an
sliding tile puzzle (with an enforced delay between each move) users
find the solution quicker than a zero delay puzzle. [Also the users
hate the delays]. The users can always think and plan, but the forced
delay makes them plan.

Another anecdote I've heard off is with complex IR systems, designers
have designed-in delays to may query processing time consistent for
all queries. [No idea if this gave a measured influence]
