All, The Motor Industry Software Reliability Association (MISRA), www.misra.org.uk, published a set of C coding guidelines a few years ago. These have proved popular and there have been a number of guideline forum (attended by about 50-70 people). The next meeting is on 18 October in Coventry. Most of their guidelines are based on technical issues. Hopefully more cognitively based ones will appear in the years to come. There are other ppig issues associated with guidelines. Like programmers attitudes to being made to follow them, how an organisation integrates them into its practices (or not). There is a deviation mechanism, how do developers use it, is it seen as a convenient get out or useful escape hatch in emergencies? There are often groups of people there from companies and sometimes their suspicion can be overpowering. Why do we have to use these guidelines, we are not doing anything wrong, who is going to see the results? Things are not helped by the presence of half a dozen or so vendors trying to sell them tools. These guidelines are used by very large manufacturing companies who have large development groups. The sort of people who might fork out for some research. To get your foot in the door you will have to get to Coventry and cough up 50 (it was around that last time, I don't know if they have academic rates) under your own steam. derek -- Derek M Jones tel: +44 (0) 1252 520 667 Knowledge Software Ltd mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Applications Standards Conformance Testing http://www.knosof.co.uk - Automatic footer for [EMAIL PROTECTED] ---------------------------------- To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] unsubscribe discuss To join the announcements list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] subscribe announce To receive a help file, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] help This list is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss%40ppig.org/ If you have any problems or questions, please mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
