It is clear (and has been for many years in fact) that patterns and programming
plans are related but are different concepts. A pattern is an emergent
abstraction that represents a common design solution. Patterns act as a abstract
exemplars to guide design and support emergent properties of software systems.
Thjey also provide a vocabulary for software designers to discuss software design
-- they are a shared language. Programming plans however seem to me to be
personal things, they represent the way a specific individual reasons about a
software construct.

To merge the two ideas which are to me distinct would be to merge the shared and
the individual.

Russel.
