Given the way the discussion has been going, I cannot resist telling my favorite computer science joke of all time (for all I know, it may be a true story).
A programmer has to make a change to a piece of code written by someone else. He discovers an entire page of code without a single comment. Feeling extremely annoyed, he works through the code, which is very abstruse and initially appears to be very poorly written. It takes him 8 hours to figure out what the module is doing (this is just one page worth). When he is done, he not only understands what is being done and recognizes how elegantly it is done, but he understands why no comments are needed.
