All, Studies of programmer behavior should be done using software commercial developers. I have managed to obtain a slot at a software development conference to perform an experiment.
I was hoping to do a variant of the Wason selection problem, using C if statements (I ran a trial experiment last year with half a dozen people). The academic who was interested has another conference to attend and not having been involved with this kind of experiment before I don't feel competent to do it myself. What is available is not great (one, perhaps two, 30 minute slot(s) during lunchtime), but it is an opportunity to start the ball rolling. The developers I talk to are very interested in this kind of thing. A write up in the ACCU newsletter (I have volunteered to do one) and a favourable response from members could see invitations to future conferences with larger time slots being made available. There is no funding. This is an opportunity to try out a single idea, with experienced developers, perhaps leading to further experiments (and even a paper). I am not wedded to the Wason selection problem. If you have idea then suggest it. I have no urge to get involved with any other aspect of peoples research, although I am interested in making use of their results. If you are interested and have performed experiments before then email me. I will leave the offer open until the New Year. I will have to give the organizers notice of a cancellation, or offer to give a talk on something. The Association of C and C++ Users group (www.accu.org, which now also includes Java) attracts mostly software developers from industry to their conference, which have a practical rather than theoretical orientation. The spring conference is at Oxford in April 2003 http://www.accuconference.co.uk/ We ought to be able to attract 20, perhaps even 50 subjects. The equipment will need to be at the paper and pencil level. derek -- Derek M Jones tel: +44 (0) 1252 520 667 Knowledge Software Ltd mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Applications Standards Conformance Testing http://www.knosof.co.uk - Automatic footer for [EMAIL PROTECTED] ---------------------------------- To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] unsubscribe discuss To join the announcements list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] subscribe announce To receive a help file, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] help This list is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss%40ppig.org/ If you have any problems or questions, please mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
