I appreciate the fact that Resources can delete themselves and that makes sense when a resource isn't a participant in a containment hierarchy. Likewise, support for containment of resources is important because many resources are modeled that way. Locking into one or the other is too limiting. Making specific accomodation in the API for both would lead to modality which is bad. An API that allows implementation of both models, without specifically committing to either, feels right to me.
