I've entered a RFE: "Support magic numbers in FileRepresentation" http://restlet.tigris.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=728 If you are interested in working on this feature, you are welcome. Just keep in mind that this would be part of Restlet core, so we can't rely on third party libraries. Currently, the Directory can automatically set the media type based on file extensions. I don't think java.io.File has any special capability in this area.
