Good news. I managed to overcome all the difficulties. I've got it all working like a charm. I even wrapped up an example maven project containing a working configuration along with some simple classes that I wrote.
You can merge it into your project if you like. I really think that if you advertised it a little, it could get some pretty good traffic. I think there isn't really a viable alternative to what you wrote, and I spent nearly a week looking for something decent. Spring is fairly well known.
