Now the movies ...
well you might see someone stand up in the middle of it or someones head
pop up or the screen tilt sideways. People just trying to make
a living in a civilization that hasn't changed much in 5,000 years in many
parts. Land based broadband is very rare ... most is satellite
but the bandwidth isn't all that great.? They need WiMAX, WiFi, DSL,
Cable etc. Not much fiber and what was there was dug up to get
the kevlar out of it! .........Later, Brian

Brian-
Youve obviously been there, cause you describe it exactly how it is.
Afghanistan is one of the poorest and most primitive cultures in the world.
People live in stone and mud shacks. They herd goats and mine
lapis from Blue Mtn. The desert is far drier than SoCal, only 2"
of rain so not even a tumbleweed grows. They grow poppies down
by the creeks and rivers where theres water. 16 afghanis killed
at the local Souk [market] by 2 Taleban bombs last week. so everyone is
feeling edgy.
I thought the satellite internet was slow, but it runs through
5 or 7 switches, some of which loop back, so the LAN
architecture is the problem. In the middle of the night [right now] the
bandwidth
isnt split 60 ways and the satellite internet is as fast as DSL in
the states 200 KB/s. Yes I know they adverrtise 3 MB/s for DSL
and 6 MB/s for cable internet, but speedtest.net says 200 KB/s
is more typical back home in OB.
