Heard this on KPBS a few minutes ago and thought it was interesting.

SAN DIEGO — The city’s new IT committee will include information
technology experts from the community as well as council members.

Council president Tony Young got unanimous support for his plan to form
a sub-committee to improve Internet access and broaden cell phone and
other computer platforms for city workers and the public.

Young said his goal is to make it easier for the public to interact with
city officials, speed up the process for business licensure and among
other things, improve communication among the city’s workforce.

“For example we have 2,500 or more housing units the city owns, wouldn’t it be
great if we could identify Wi-Fi services for all of those and include local
business in the process?” said Young.

He also said improving the city’s outdated computer infrastructure will
save money and improve efficiency.

“The bottom line is: Can we become more efficient and can we save more money
with these new technologies we’re discovering everyday?” Young said.

The new IT sub- committee is expected to be in place within the next few
months. Once in place the committee will search for money to fund the IT
project.
