Hi all, I'm really excited by the number of programming groups popping up in the area.
- Code for Summit County (http://www.meetup.com/Code-for-Summit-County) - Akron Software Developers Guild (http://www.meetup.com/AkronSDG/) - Akron Programming Languages Group (http://www.meetup.com/Akron-Programming-Languages-Group/) and one that I'm announcing today that I'm starting: Northeast Ohio Scala Programmers Group - or NEOScala. (http://www.meetup.com/neoscala) Scala (http://www.scala-lang.org/) is a programming language on the JVM that combines Functional Programming (FP) and Object Oriented Programming (OOP). It's used at Twitter, Foursquare, Klout, NASA, and several other big name places, and recently it's seeing a rise in popularity. I'm starting NEOScala to focus on both Scala and Functional Programming (and whatever else members decide to make the group :D). Our Meetup group fees are sponsored by Typesafe which is a commercial company sponsoring the development of Scala and Scala tools/frameworks. I went to a meetup for the next closest Scala meetup group (Pittsburgh) and people out there seemed to love the idea of me starting an Ohio one. Several people out there offered to come by and give talks and whatnot. I talked with Chris on IRC and he said that we'd be able to use the SYN/HAK meeting room for our meetings, which will probably be monthly, with occasional before-a-month-has-passed meetings, so I've listed SYN/HAK as a sponsor as well. If you have any interest in Scala, Functional Programming, and/or the JVM, we'd love to have you be a part of the meetup and make some new friends. :) -Ricky
