Greetings Discuss list members!

As you've no doubt heard we had a great time at Squarefest over the
weekend. I was only able to attend for about an hour but Torrie, and others
were able to get the word out about Syn/Hak. G as Always was a social
butterfly flitting among the crowd directing people he knew and some he
didn't towards the booth.
Syn/Hak has been slowly growing in exposure over the summer. In the
past few weeks we've had impromptu tours given to representatives from MAKE
magazine, video interviews by local media, as well as the normal open hours
and events hosted at Syn/Hak. Events such as the LAN party and Code for
Summit county are chances for the space to garner new members or at least
new returning visitors. Come November our involvement in the Akron
Mini-Makerfaire will undoubtedly bring new faces to the space. Some of
them will be reporters some of them will be people wanting to experience
Syn/Hak. If you happen to be there be sure to greet them and share with
them what draws you to Syn/Hak!

Those of you who drop by the space this week will notice that cleaning
gnomes have visited the space. It needs to be kept clean. That means all
hand tools on the tool wall when you are done using them, workbenches clear
from debris and project parts so other people can use them, and NO LIQUID
IN GARBAGE CANS! Seriously. We encourage you to bring food and drink to the
space and to help in stocking the fridge with beverages. However leaving
half full pop cans and bottles laying around the space or thrown into
garbage cans is unacceptable.
We are a hackerspace, we sell SPACE to our membership. When I walked
into the space last week it looked like an episode of hoarders. there
wasn't a clear flat surface anywhere, there were clouds of fruit flies
throughout the space. We cannot survive as an entity if this continues. I
understand we have large community projects such as the Element14 filming,
so for now that table gets a pass. We offer member storage make use of it!
If you cannot afford the membership level for the storage space you require
I'm sure something can be worked out. There is no reason for every single
work bench, table, ottoman, and coffee table in the space to have half
completed projects on it. This cannot and will not be the status quo.
These problems are not the problems relating to a select few, this are
contributed and propagated by the entire membership. Every key holder was
given a key on the assumption that they can treat the space in a respectful
manner. Leaving the space unusable and littered with garbage is not living
up to the 'excellence to others' ethos we espouse.

There is no excuse for how things were; no need to do anything other
than clean up after yourself and ensure all work surfaces are usable when
you leave for the day. Be excellent to your community.

Thank you for your time,
Andrew
Syn/Hak Secretary
