Hi Omar, Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly and for pitching my request to your group. I know this seems really absurd, but in the library world things are scheduled way in advance. I have to have all of my plans ready for the summer library program by the end of January at the latest!
If this can work for y'all and someone is willing to commit this far in advance, I would really appreciate it. On the other hand, we are doing a kick off for SLP on Saturday April 26, 2014. On that day we are having a giant science day at the library with all kinds of demonstrations and hands on projects for all ages. If you or any of your fellow hackers would like to come to that, it would be wonderful. I would love for the kids in this area to see a 3D printer and some of the other things that you had at the Akron Mini Faire. We are working on putting this together right now, but if someone is interested in coming to this they wouldn't have to commit right now. Also, I'm not sure what type of compensation I could provide for this either. This is my first year in this job and I am still trying to wrap my head around all the budget info. Sorry to be such a pest and so needy, but it's my job. I really want to get kids pumped about science concepts this summer but the powers that be require me to do everything waaaay in advance. I am typically a "let's do it tomorrow" kind of person but that's not what I get paid for. Thanks again for your interest. anne rhodes ----- Original Message ----- From: "Omar Rassi" <[email protected]> To: "SYN/HAK discussion list" <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, November 6, 2013 1:11:23 PM Subject: Re: [SH-Discuss] looking for presenter Hello Anne, I'm Omar, one of Syn/Hak's members, I brought up your email in yesterday's meeting and we love the idea of doing this, one of the ideas we toyed with in the past was making a portable mini hackerspace kit that we can take with us to events. As a plus, the summer of 2014 is far enough in the future that it gives us time to identify presenters, make gadgets, and come up with safe activities for geek youth. We'll definitely keep this summer program in a list of events we want to participate in. The theme of the Summer Library Program (SLP) for 2014 is "Spark a Reaction"@ Your Library. It is very Science oriented and I am hoping to do a program where tweens and teens can learn about some science concepts. I am envisioning some short presentations and some hands on things, (soldering, squishy circuits, that cool vacuum thing that I saw at Akron Public library. I have some info about making a simple motor and something like that might be good too. The program would probably last 60 to 90 mins. Someone at the Akron Maker Faire told me about your "young aristotle" program and I'm probably looking for a mini version of that. What I am looking for is someone or two who would be willing to come here one night or even several different nights and do something like this. We can pay but do not have a huge budget. The SLP runs from the beginning of June thru the end of July. If you know anyone who might want to do this, can you please put them in touch with me? Just FYI: The summer library program is a big thing all over Ohio and anyone who developed some type of tween/teen friendly program could probably stay busy all summer presenting it at libraries. Even if you can't come here, this would be a good opportunity for someone who has the time and inclination. I enjoyed your booth at the mini maker faire. I wish I lived closer to Akron. Thank you for your time.
