Hello, friends.

Its been pretty cramped in the space lately. I know that we're out and about,
looking for some new spaces, but I'm still a bit worried that we're not out of
21 W. North yet. I think a major limiting factor in this is our lack of funds.

Here's where I make the request via proof:

1. We need more space
2. More space costs more money
∎ We need more money

I have my serious face on. We really do need more space. There are on average
20 people who come to meetings, and there were actually more new faces at the
space last Tuesday than the four members who showed up *early*. 1,700 square
feet gets cramped fast, especially when most of it is full of useful tools,
equipment, and projects. Imagine if we had 3,000 square feet, and a meeting or
event didn't have to take up the whole space.

At last recall, Alexander had said that we could afford roughly $650/mo, iirc.
Even then, thats cutting it very close. Even with just two new members, its
hard to break $700.

I'm not the treasurer, so I can't make a statement about the financial
distribution of our membership, but I would like everyone in the community to
seriously consider becoming a member to support SYNHAK. I think we're up to 20
members by now if I'm paying attention right. discuss@ has over 100, and most
of them probably aren't robots. It is incredibly common to hear "Hi, welcome
to SYNHAK! You look new!" almost every day of the week, and I don't think even
half of them will get this mail.

Membership is fairly cheap, considering the kind of return on investment you'd
be getting at just $35/mo. Its not really about paying to use the space; you
don't need to pay dues to use SYNHAK's resources. For most of it, you don't
even need to be a member. I'd like to remind everyone of SYNHAK's mission:

"SYN/HAK provides an environment for people to educate, create, and share
amongst themselves and others within the domains of technology, art and
science."

Our frontpage distills that even further:

"SYNHAK is an infrastructure provider for people who want to make things."

SYNHAK is more than just a workshop. Its more than just a few cramped rooms in
a big empty warehouse just outside of downtown. We're an infrastructure
provider. SYNHAK really does provide all of the tools and resources needed to
make something cool: an active IRC channel, very active mailing lists, regular
classes that cover a wide field of topics, a vast network of skills, an open
forum for sharing ideas, mechanisms for others to easily jump in and
contribute, and probably more stuff I don't even know about.

We've got an incredibly vibrant and active community of creative and inventive
people who like to bounce ideas off of each other. I've often heard the
statement "Oh, no, I don't think anyone here knows that, but I know someone
who does!". I'm also told that our community is the among the friendliest
they've met.

If you think what SYNHAK is doing is Pretty Neat, please consider joining as a
member. SYNHAK gets a bit more cash to rent a bigger space, and you are given
a powerful tool: a say in how SYNHAK continues to develop and become the
perfect outlet for your creative energies, whether it be for fun or profit. We
have no hiearchial leader. Nobody is strictly in charge. It is through our
collective inertia that a forward direction is created. As a result,
membership really is that powerful. If you look at SYNHAK and see it as
something good for Akron, yourself, or the planet in general, we invite you to
come help shape its future.

If you're already a member, maybe consider bumping up your membership to a
larger subscription of $55, $105, or even $250. Even if you're not a member,
our donation jar aches for human touch.

Lets keep growing SYNHAK.

In Excellence,
Torrie
