Heya, folks. I'd like to allocate $5,000 of our grant money towards physical improvements of the space:
* Building walls * Installing more electrical and overhead lighting * Building more tables and workbenches * Paints * Kitchen cabinetry and shelving * Storage throughout the space * Fixing ceiling leaks I've estimated that the plywood and drywall for complete wall to ceiling enclosure of the current machine shop is approximately $3,000. That leaves $2k for electrical, workbenches, kitchen storage, misc shelving, and other things. I'd like to allocate this money into our current buildout/maintenance budget. That way we could follow the same pattern we've been doing: Send me a budget, estimation or receipt for what you're buying, and you'll get a slice of the money. We would still have $10k to split out to other things, but I feel that making the space more usable for hacking should be our highest priority. Supplies for classes is nice, but once those people leave the class, that money doesn't often make it back to us. Improving the 3d printer is nice, but not everyone uses the 3d printer. Saving some of it for our AWS hosting is nice, but we're a physical space first. I feel confident in claiming that there is not a single synhakker who does not step foot inside the space, or has not complained about not finding tools, or has had to dig through piles of stuff on the ground, or been irritated at all the dust, or hasn't been able to work on their things because of physical insufficiencies in the building. If it turns out to be a lot cheaper than $5k for all of this, we'd still have a lot left over for more direct improvements to the space. That money could be turned around into the maintenence budget to buy wood, fasteners, metal, consumables, and all kinds of other supplies needed to keep SYNHAK productive and useful to everyone. I plan on moderating the meeting again this Tuesday since it went well enough, so I won't be able to bring this up during the meeting. However, I think this is something that we should all be discussing. This is just my $0.02 on what I think we should be focusing on. The walls that were brought up are part of this whole idea, so this is more of a concrete implementation of that idea.
