What this line achieves is pointing tempNote to tObj, which would have to have been created prior to this assignment. In the assignment, tObj.getItemAt() is being passed an integer value.
javacast is a java method that ensures that the variable "i" is type casted into an integer. ColdFusion has a similar function called Int().
To find how tobj is created, you will have to search "higher" up in the code for its declaration.
You can use <cfdump var="#tObj#"> to see more pertinent information about the memory space.
You are on the right path and are getting closer.

you should look for something on the page that is creating the "Note" object...
try dumping the object:
<cfdump var="#Note#">
it may say what it is an instance of... or give you some clues...
