For cfselect, you may be over complicating it:

<cfselect name="vendorName" value="Vend_Name" display="Vend_Name" query="
vendorData" />

cfselect produces the options tags for you if you use the value and
display attributes of the cf tag.  This is handy when creating really simple
forms.  Also, if you put preservedata="true" in your <cfform> a la <cfform
preserveData="true">, if you submit the form to the same page then the
selection you submitted with should stay selected.

This removes a lot of display logic code.  preserveData works in CFMX 7
and I am not sure in CFMX 6.1.
