I have had no problems working with small clients that use Access as long as the database is used as a data source with active connection turned on.

The database is not a data source in this case. The database is being treated as a file.

I suspect the user that is accessing this is ColdFusion, which would keep the LDB files.

What aspects of the database do they need? VB forms? Data entry?

I typically do not support Access as a file, but as a data source.

If they just need the data, can you provide a database pool? Or perhaps remove out what they need into spreadsheets?

Hi Craig,

Check the settings in your DSN. Depending on the default behavior, this could be creating an exclusive lock and then nbot releasing the lock based on a time out value or a restart of the CF server.

THis is one of the reasons why access is not a good choice for a back end database to a web application. If you are on the Microsoft platform, MS SQL Svr express 2005 is a better choice and migration is fairly easy.

The problem appears to be that the record locking file (*.ldb) is being left when the user closes the database. When the file is first put out on the server (no ldb file exists) the file opens just fine (no message). But closing the file does not delete the ldb file as it should when the last person who has the file opened closes the database. Because this ldb file is still out there on subsequent attempts, it appears to MS Access that there is a user that still has the file open - the question now is why, when opening the database through CF does the ldb file not get deleted once the database is closed.

Something tells me you should try some other way than cflocation to open it.
I tried it and it seems buggy where just a clickable link to it opens fine
with no message like the one you describe. This is just my instinct though
so I don't know if that is the real issue or not.

We are giving the user access to the database on the file system - this
purpose of this app is to better organize all of the various files this
department uses - information pertaining to the file (name, subject matter
expert, etc) is displayed and there is a "launch" button to open the file in
it's native app (like ms access or excel).....

What is your intent for the user to be able to do? Are you giving them access to the database on the file system or do you want them to just query the database?

Subject: [ACFUG Discuss] MS Access Issue

I have a CF App that is attempting to open an MS Access Database - when
Access is opening the file, the following message is produced: "You do
not

have exclusive access to the database at this time. If you proceed to
make changes, you may not be able to save them later.". I've verified
that there is no other users opening the file or working with the file
in

any way when this occurs. It does appear that a record locking file is
created when the user opens the file through the app. They are able to
go

directly to Access and open the file successfully without the message,
so

it appears that the issue is the way that I'm opening the file through
CF

- I'm just using a cflocation to open the file. Has anyone experienced
this issue and know how to open the file without getting this message?

Thanks for in advance for the help.
