Speaking of Minority Report, the technology the "police" used was already
developed by MIT grad student, John Underkoffler. Steven Spielberg attended
a 3-day conference of what life may be like by 2054. Yes, it was
still movie magic, but the concept was there. ("It was only masquerading as
science fiction. Now, it's science fact.") The problem with this technology
and Microsoft's is the price point entry...it's high for the average
consumer.
Underkoffler doesn't sell the gloves and video screen yet. He offers the
application as a packaged service around $300k for your next presentation.
And the Microsoft interface comes at tidy sum of $5k.
Now with Flex (waving the flex flag) you can build an engaging interface
with a bit of the "bounce" physics seen in Microsoft's video. The current
I/O issue is the mouse which is a single point interfacing tool. If you
combine the Wii controllers, you can gain the two-point inputs you need to
have the same experience without the minimum $5k entry point
Personal costs...
$3000 for workstation to develop Flex app
$499 Flex license (w/o charting)
$3 Mt. Dew
$12 Four pot pies
$310 Wii console with controllers (currently on eBay)
Ok so the entry point is still a bit high, however you can buy in chunks
instead of a one time cost.
