Thanks Doug, the RSVP tool looks great. Well Doug is the first and so far only submittal. If you want to qualify for the code-off please post your submittals to this list today. >Now, besides the question above about Katapult use, should we consider using 100% Flex/Flash for the site? Actually Adobe has asked that we not do this ;) But that said they do want to see apps and features that demonstrate the great features of Flex which was partly the reason for the code-off. Here's the direct message on that I got from Adobe..
On the surface, it sounds like a great idea for a Flex user group to leverage Flex to build their user group web site. As we say internally, it's always good to "eat your own dog food." However, as I am sure you all know, Flex is geared more towards building web applications than web pages. Notice how flex.org is not built in Flex. There are a couple of reasons for this. First off, it does not necessarily show off Flex in its best light. Secondly, Flex pages don't get indexed by Google, so you're losing out on any SEO uptake as well. Going forward I am going to request that new Flex UGs build their sites using HTML (though cool Flex widgets or components are encouraged!). For groups that already have a UG site built in Flex, I am certainly not going to force you to change over to an HTML based site.but if you have the time and wanted to do this on your own I certainly would appreciate it! Never enough freakin time to code the ultimate, eh? I'll attach what I have so far, its all GUI stuff and rough. rsvp.mxml is a flexlet type gizmo to RSVP for a event. You can see it here http://www.cubicleman.com/affug/ do we really need to have a login to RSVP? I was thinking not. The thing to finish here is making the DIV containing the flexlet expand/contract. Idea was to use the external interface to call a JS method to handle this on enter/ext state in Flex. admin.mxml was to be a admin app idea. Questions to answer: how to integrate with Katapult? Or do we need to? I had in mind a event system where basically each event was like a blog entry, but its date driven not subject driven. Events in the current month would appear on the home page. A flex calendar would be there to let the user nav through dates. Selected dates would be click able to open that event. For prizes I had in mind a simple flex app that took the inputs of current event and number of prizes to give then uses this http://www.cubicleman.com/flexexamples/carouselroundabout/ <http://www.cubicleman.com/flexexamples/carouselroundabout/> to display a 'winners circle'. Now, besides the question above about Katapult use, should we consider using 100% Flex/Flash for the site? I certainly want to continue in this effort and get something rawkin kewl DK On Dec 11, 2007 2:41 PM, Douglas Knudsen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: haha, wish I was that quick. But keep in mind, these are suppose to be small flexlites, nothing heavy so don't feel like you need to spend a hugh amount of time on it. As for the existing structure of the site. There's no underlining database yet just a collection of cfml pages. So if you need a database, use what ever you like. I prefer mssql or mysql myself. But access will work as well. Only 2 weeks away though! :) So, is any infrastructure available already on affug.org to meld this with? DK ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: John Mason <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Nov 30, 2007 2:55 PM Subject: [AFFUG Discuss] Adobe Prize Giveaway To: [email protected] Ok, I dropped the ball a bit on this one. We need to have the Adobe Prize Giveaway before the end of the year. Since we're not meeting again until January, I thought it might be nice to have a small code-off. The AFFUG site isn't directly running off of Flex or Flash due to a variety of reasons. But, we can still have small tools on the site that help show off some of the functionality that Flash and Flex gives you. There are a lot of little features that the site currently needs.. -a better RSVP system -a prize giveaway generator for the door prizes -a calendar system showing past and future AFFUG events -maybe a job posting area -anything else you can think of.. Let's have a small code-off with a due date of Dec 17th. The work needs to be original, open source and using either Flash, Flex or AIR. You can simply post your entries on this list and I'll post them on the site for review. The members will be able to vote on the site from Dec 18th to Dec 20th on their favorite apps. The winner will get the Adobe Grand Prize giveaway which is a single purchase of any Adobe software totaling up to $2100. Also, I'm not participating in this contest in order to remain objective in all of this. Hopefully, we have several entries that will add additional functionality to the site.
