AH.. I got it.. I had to use the <mx:RadioButtonGroup> tag for this to work.
Thanks everyone. Never seen that tag before.

you might also have to explicitly set the group:

 

<mx:RadioButtonGroup id="yearGroup" groupName="year"
change="Alert.show(yearGroup.selectedValue)"/>

<mx:RadioButton groupName="year" id="option1" label="1942"/>
