Interesting,
http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/langref/mx/rpc/remoting/mxml/RemoteObject.html
RemoteObject has a requestTimeout property.  If set to < 0 then it does not
timeout.  The docs do not provide a default value for this.  Have you tried
setting this?  Or maybe the browser itself is doing it?
